Glutathione is one of the body’s most important and potent antioxidants. Glutathione is a small peptide molecule consisted of three amino acids: cysteine, glutamic acid, and glycine. It exists in every cell of our body. It is involved in many important biological functions including immune system function, protection against oxidative cell damage, and recycling of vitamins C and E. Antioxidants are substances that combat free radicals and protect our body from oxidative stress. Glutathione exists in two forms in our body- the reduced (GSH) form and the oxidized form (GSSG). When our body combats oxidative stress, GSH is oxidized to GSSG. The ratio of GSH/GSSG is an important indicator of oxidative stress in clinical settings.
